You must be at least 18 to buy a long gun (rifle or shotgun) and at least 21 to purchase a handgun from a federally licensed dealer. You also need a valid Michigan driver’s license or state-issued ID, which serves as proof of residency.
Before any purchase from a licensed dealer, you must pass a background check.
Federally licensed dealer run the required federal background check on your Several factors disqualify you from owning firearms altogether. A felony conviction bars you from possessing any firearm until you meet specific restoration requirements (discussed below).
